Description
St Catherines Chapel View by Roy Pedersen www.roypedersenphotography.com St. Catherine's Chapel is set high on a hilltop just outside the village of Abbotsbury. It overlooks Chesil Beach and the Isle of Portland in Dorset,UK The barrel-vaulted 14th century chapel was built by the monks of the nearby Abbotsbury Abbey as a place of pilgrimage and retreat. The fireworks known as Catherine wheels commemorate her torture in the 3rd century AD, when the Roman Emperor Maximus I ordered her to be broken on a wheel set with sword points for protesting about the persecution of Christians.
An angel is said to have broken the wheel, and after her subsequent execution Catherines body was said to have been conveyed to the heights of Mount Sinai by angels. You can visit St. Catheine's Monestary on Mount Sinai in Egypt where you can see the burning bush.
