Uxmal is an ancient Maya city of the classical period in present-day Mexico. It is considered one of the most important archaeological sites of Maya culture, along with Chichen Itza in Mexico; Caracol and Xunantunich in Belize, and Tikal in Guatemala. It is located south of Merida, capital of Yucatan state in Mexico. It is considered one of the Maya cities most representative of the region's dominant architectural style. The Maya Empire, centered in the tropical lowlands of Guatemala and Mixico, reached the peak of its power and influence around the sixth century A.D. The Maya excelled at agriculture, pottery, hieroglyph writing, calendar-making and mathematics, and left behind an astonishing amount of impressive architecture and symbolic artwork. Most of the great stone cities of the Maya were abandoned by A.D. 900. Uxmal Myan Ruins.
