The Needles are a row of large pillars of chalk that rise out from the sea near the western end of the Isle of Wight guarded by a 19th-century lighthouse. The Isle of Wight is an island off the south coast of England. It’s known for its beaches and seafront promenades such as sandy Shanklin Beach. You can find dinosaur remains and fossils in areas like Compton Bay and Yaverland Beach.
The Needles form the western tip of a band of chalk that crosses the centre of the Isle of Wight, stretching to Culver Cliff in the east. This chalk ridge continues west under the sea to Dorsets Isle of Purbeck, and is believed to have been connected at one time to Old Harry Rocks, that rise out of the sea about 20 miles away .
